Here is FOXNews’ reaction to Bobby Jindal’s speech after Obama’s last night. Poor guy, he didn’t stand a chance. And why do Repubs call anything positive that a president does “Reaganesque?” Did I miss something in the 80’s while I was sitting in my sandbox? Because I don’t remember Reagan being THEGREATESTPRESIDENTEVER.
When historians list the best presidents, its always Washington, Lincoln, and FDR as the top three and then four and below writhes in flux after some academic reexamines William Henry Harrison’s month in office and moves him from 46th to 44th, pushing James Buchanan down to 45th and James Garfield to a pathetic 48th! (Haha, Tippecanoe and history, too!) Modern Repubs seem to want to canonize Reagan into that lauded top three. But I don’t think its ever going to really take hold beyond the bloviating of Charles Krauthammer because, to me, it doesn’t seem that the Cold War was a trying enough time to mint a “greatest ever” president.
The founding, the Civil War, and the Great Depression/WWII all are first tier shitstorm events, big explosions of chaos that allow for the rise of a great president. Unfortunately for Reagan, I just don’t see the Cold War rising to to that level. Certainly the end of the Cold War with the “tear down this wall” quote was a great moment (and led to, I would also argue, a pretty good Jesus Jones song) but the Red Scare is just not the same as the Red Coats, the Rebs, or effing bankers and Nazis. All are bad, but there are orders of magnitude seperating them.
And the jump cuts in the beginning of the video cracked me up.
